May 4th (Chokaisan) Hokotate carpark ~ Shinzan ~ Nakajimadai Recreation Forest
The first day’s summit at Chokaisan (Shin-zan) was a bluebird day and not a puff of wind, it was perfect.
The road to Hokotate was closed until 8am, so we started later than we would have liked. This day we covered quite a long distance, climbed for 5 hours up, skied for a little over an hour and then had to walk out for what felt like another hour.
The group split at the top, one group going down the direct north face and the other down the valley which went west and curved north. I was a little slow in deciding to go down the north face and found myself surrounded by rocks, alone and wondering which direction the others went. It was scary, I didn’t know if they were cliffs or not. But that was forgotten the moment I saw the other two ski out towards the bottom. The north face had hard snow at the top but it softened up and it was nice and steep. Perfect conditions!
We met up with the others and made our way down. I managed to get within 100m of the end of the snow line with my snowboard and ski poles. Then switched to ski mode and flailed my way down for the last 100m, then walked the rest of the way.
