May 5th Chokaisan – Haraigawa carpark - Shichikou-san
The 2nd day’s summit at chokaisan (Shichikou-san) at the very top was windy, but in the sheltered area it was comfortable.
Woke up at 3:30am to start climbing from 5am. Was an early start as 1 group was driving back to Kobe, the other to Hiuchigatake. I was able to skin up most of the way, then put on ski crampons, before packing up the board and using boot crampons for the final ascent to the summit. Visibility was good. It was windy at the very top. Although it was icy towards the top it was faster and easier to ski or snowboard down slowly.
The rail edge was more than enough. Some people chose to bootpack it down to softer snow with crampons, but I wasn’t willing to do that without an ice axe. Both methods got us down safely in the end. We skied down away from the climbing route, but ended up going too far to the west. We had to bootpack up a little while and traverse back to the correct ridge. Our mountain activities were finished by 10:20am. We had a long drive, arriving at Hiuchigatake at 8:30pm.
